This is so true. Dickens funded his own halfway house to get women off the streets. He hired a woman to run the reform house and it was largely successful, with many women going to the colonies to start life fresh. There is a whole book about this that I want to read. It was all on the DL, as he didn’t really want people to know. But despite his many flaws, he often did put his money on what he wrote about.
