The issue with many Ph.D programs is that schools want you full time for research and/or as a TA. For those young, like my daughter in Aerospace, it's fantastic. But for those older, with years of experience, and who still love and need to work, there is ageism at work, as well as numerous other factors (barriers) in admittance (cronyism, etc).
