In Ulysses by James Joyce, the hero, Leopold Bloom is a secular Jew, born in Ireland, but with a Eastern European father. He is tormented by Nationalists, The Citizen, based on a real Nationalist leader. When asked what is a country? Bloom says the same people living inside the country, or even living outside. And it's love that should bond people. Of course he was hounded out of the pub.
