Fantastic piece, Melissa! I will use this in the fall along with other materials for teaching the personal narrative. I love using Langston Hughes "Salvation," and a whole other bunch of stuff. The problem with English teachers is that they assign essays like write about Romeo and Juliet, but avoid narrative, persuasive, and descriptive writing. How many times will students need to write a literary analysis essay in their life? lol. Cheers! Keep on teaching and writing!
