As a writer, I use symbolism deliberately. For instance, in one published story called The Proving Grounds, the father sees a deer on the road at night - but the deer is just a lawn ornament - not real - and it's missing its hind leg. So it just has three legs and not four - like the family now just has father and two kids - the mom divorced the father. Also. while boating, the wash from the boat bounces back from from the shore, and collide - like the father and the son. Sometimes, I guess - the writer builds better than they know and the Jungian collective unconscious is at play. But in writing, I think most of the symbolism has been inserted with care and attention. Thanks for reading!
