After reading "Between the World and Me," I started teaching in AP Lang, "The Ballot or the Bullet," with students (mostly white) wanting to read more of Malcolm X. The students also read all of MLK much better: "Letter from Birmingham Jail" and all of "The Narrative of Frederick Douglass." My smart students are often shocked by this information. History is white washed. Totally. One 1 out of 60 actually heard all of his "I Have a Dream Speech."
